The Archival Process

Over the course of 9 months, a professional archiving team digitized and catalogued the entirety of the William J. Hennessy Jr. Collection. From childhood paintings made in the 1960s to Supreme Court sketches completed in 2024, the collection is digitized, searchable, and will be preserved for decades to come.

This site contains a sampling of the over 14,000 drawings, paintings, sketches, and works on paper that reflect the life and works of William J. Hennessy Jr. Separated into his courtroom and personal collections, Hennessy’s body of work is both a historical archive of the recent history of the American judicial system and also a glimpse into the deeply astute perceptions of the artist. Spanning 40 years of careful observations, this collection embodies the legacy of Hennessy as an artist, courtroom sketcher, and curious spectator of the world.
